The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has sent a document coded 1999 to the Ministry of Finance to request a reconsideration of tariff rates on vans to ensure fairness for both importers and manufacturers in the country.

According to VCCI, 36 companies have submitted complaints and ask the representative of business community to stand for them to settle the matter of converting a line of Kia Morning and Daewoo sedans into vans to circumvent taxes. VCCI has collected comments from concerned parties and asked the Ministry of Finance to take the matter into consideration to ensure the equality for businesses and avoid prolonged lawsuits.

Previously, the Departments of Customs of Hai Phong City and the Ho Chi Minh City had a written confirmation that the permit for clearing van shipments is in line with instructive documents and a certification issued by the Vietnam Register.

According to the Ministry of Finance, importers are suspected of deliberately transforming Daewoo Matiz and Kia Morning to avoid taxes. Besides, the ministry has directed the General Department of Taxation to check up domestic van manufactures to ensure the equality.
